The Jewish Ghetto

The Jewish ghetto was created in the 1500's as a way for the Pope to control the Jewish population. They were given curfews, limited on what kind of work they could do and treated very poorly by the Romans around them. They would be paraded around preached at by the church in attempts to convert them to Christianity. This went on for about 300 years before the regulations on the Jewish community were abolished. Despite the constant abuse from their fellow citizens, the Jewish community prevailed in their faith and some continued to live in the ghetto when the regulations were abolished. In the ghetto, some of which has been demolished by the church over the years (there used to be 5 buildings for worship, now there is one?) There are local pastry shops, cafes and restaurants for the locals and tourists that visit the neighborhood, but more notably, gold pavers that mark the homes of the Jewish people who once lived there. Durring world war II 6,000 Jewish Romans were pulled from their homes and marched down the streets to trains. They were packed into trains and buses that took them away to concentration camps in Germany. The article "16 October 1943" written by Giacomo Debenedetti, describes the events that happened in the night before and during the morning of the same day.
